Picture this: you remember a song you love and are around someone you can share it with. They listen then shoot you a side eye stare that says ‘I can’t believe you listen to this shit’ so clear that they don’t have to speak.
We’ve all been there.
That’s why I wrote Jam Session, which like My Mixtape, is a literary project inspired by music. These poems and short stories are all linked to the source material – its my recommendation that you listen to the music directly before reading. Regardless of prior knowledge of the songs, the way these pieces were written is the way they were meant to be experienced.
My artistic aim is to provide the reader with a unashamedly personal view of the world through lenses crafted years before I was born. The magic of music is in the way it makes us feel, happy sad thoughtful – mind control from the past, that’s what I’m honoring here. The stories and poems in Jam Session are what these songs mean to me first, narrative constructs second – I hope this project speaks to you because the sounds I’ve based it on never stop talking to me.
