You know that giddiness in your stomach when you remember a song you love and happen to be around someone you can share it with? Then, after they listen, they shoot you the weird side eye stare in response that says ‘I can’t believe you listen to this shit’ so clear that they don’t have to speak?
I’ve been there too.
That’s why I wrote Jam Session, which like My Mixtape, is a literary project inspired entirely by music. The lines in the poems are song lyrics that are, same as the titles to the stories, links to the source material. Its my recommendation that you listen to the music either directly before or during reading, regardless of prior knowledge of the songs, because that is the way these pieces were written. My artistic aim is to provide the reader with a unashamedly personal view of the modern world through lenses created years before I was born.
The magic of music is in the way it makes us feel, happy sad thoughtful – that’s what I’m honoring here. This is my try at solving the radio-age old dilemma of trying to convince someone else that your taste in music isn’t shit. The stories and poems in Jam Session are what these songs mean to me first, narrative constructs second – I hope this project speaks to you because the sounds I’ve based it on never stop talking to me.
So, without further ado, I give you Jam Session: Stories from Sounds
